Theobald Schorn came to Ahrenshoop in the 1890s. Extensive travels had previously taken the graduate of the Munich Art Academy through the countries of the Near and Far East as far as Tibet. The interest of European artists in these unknown worlds was triggered in no small measure by the archaeological excavations of the 19th century in Egypt and the Near East. What had been published of these in writing and pictures fired the painters
