Technique: Oil Painting

Grand portrait of President George Washington (1732-1799), Commander-in-Chief to the Continental Army during the American Revolution and 1st President of the United States. General Washington is not depicted on a specific occasion, but rather the painting evokes the national icon that had taken shape during the 1790s, when President Washington was in office and Philadelphia was the capital. The depiction is reminiscent of Gilbert Stuart’s paintings that became the basis for the iconography found on the one dollar bill.
