The miser’s purse emerged at the end of the eighteenth century as techniques in the knotting and netting of materials developed. The making of these purses became a popular pastime for amateur needlewomen and specialist shops in London, such as Thomas Gardom, a purse and watch chain maker on St. James’s Street, catered to demand by selling the necessary silk thread, tassels and metal rings.
