The crown is an almost indispensable feature in representations of the Virgin Mary, for as a symbol of royalty it indicates the special respect that the Church accords the Queen of Heaven. The crown is generally fashioned from silver (sometimes gilded) or even gold.In the majestic representations of Our Lady destined for the grand and ornate altarpieces of churches in Goa, the crown is sometimes actually bigger than the image itself, lending it a truly spectacular appearance. In the closed crowns with imperial arches, the raised and curved elements are found in the wide body of the crown, and are sometimes serrated or decorated with spiked or lacy relief foliage. A cross surmounts these arches where they join in the centre. The number of arches on the crown indicates that it was made during the 18th century. This crown manifests a certain elaborate Oriental style, with a particularly Indo-Portuguese fusion evident in the interweaving and stylization of foliage and flowers, along with half-open flowers shown in profile. Interestingly, the same floral theme is also evident in many embroidered bedspreads from the same period.
