Commissionato dal Comune di Orzinuovi come ex voto per la cessazione della peste, lo Stendardo rappresenta l’esito estremo dell’opera di Vincenzo Foppa. Ne è dimostrazione l’approdo del pittore ai cosiddetti “grigi” dei volti, in grado di “velare, avvolgere, abbassare tutta la gamma” del dipinto (Longhi). Le figure, specialmente nel verso con i tre santi protettori contro la peste, rivelano appieno la sensibilità umana e devozionale di Foppa, che, rinunciando a ogni artificio, intraprende una disarmante indagine sulla realtà: così nelle ricerche sulla luce, nelle forme sgraziate e quasi disarticolate dei corpi, nella impietosa osservazione delle fisionomie e nella resa del paesaggio, appena rischiarato dalla luce e restituito con una straordinaria economia di mezzi.
