Wilhelm Camphausen wurde am 8. Februar 1818 in Düsseldorf geboren. Mit sechsundzwanzig Jahren wurde er Mitglied der Düsseldorfer Akademie. Er malte Historienbilder, gerne militärischen Inhalts. Dabei stand meist die preußische Geschichte im Mittelpunkt. Über die Zeit Friedrichs des Großen gibt es einige Gemälde, Friedrich am Sarg des Feldmarschalls Schwerin ist eines davon. Es zeigt den König vor der Leiche des vor Prag 1756 gefallenen Kurt Christophs von Schwerin, die in der Kirche des Benediktinerklosters Breunau (Brevnov) aufgebahrt war. (Jürgen Luh)
