Is it our five senses that tell us whether something we see or feel is what it is? Artist Shang-Ling Ku uses the forming of porcelain along with the discrepancy between our sense of vision and that of touch to contemplate this question. When we see an object as thin as paper, it is hard for us to believe that it can be made of porcelain. Yet, when we touch it and hear its clink, it becomes more convincing. In effect, we are getting to know an object through visual and auditory cues that trigger our sense of touch to determine what the object is made of. Thus, it is not enough to prove an object’s existence through rational justification; it is crucial to use our five senses to evaluate what is in front of us.
