Technique: Oil On Panel
The Leeuwarden Series: Members of the House of Nassau This small portrait of Hendrik Casimir I is closely related to the monumental full-length of the stadholder (SK-A-569), which is also signed by De Geest and of which there are several smaller versions. Despite the fact that this is one of a number of similar portraits of the stadholder, it is a good likeness and is meticulously painted. There is no longer any trace of the date 1632 mentioned in the Rijkmuseum collection catalogues from 1903 to 1976.41 Given the close relationship to De Geest’s portrait of Willem Frederik, dated 1632, in the same Leeuwarden Series (SK-A-530), a date around 1632 is the most logical. A copy of this portrait was made in 1671 by Johannes Tideman as part of a series of portraits for the Provinciehuis in Groningen.42 See the entry on SK-A-569 for biographical details about Hendrik Casimir I.
