Taigu Descendants is a work by the Chinese artist Yang Yongliang (Shanghai, China, 1980). Yongliang brings his contemporary knowledge to the ancient art of landscape painting. When viewed closely, these idyllic scenes are made up of skyscrapers, demolition sites and pylons, revealing the impact of rampant urbanisation. Photographs replace ink in his creations, which he describes as “digital landscapes”. For Yongliang, this process of building the digital image resembles the use of texture strokes in traditional Chinese landscape painting. Human beings are absent; with urban sprawl, these frail figures have brought about their own demise.
