Zha Shibiao, also known by his courtesy name Erzhan and courtesy names Meihe, Meihesanren, and Mihedaoren, was born in Haiyang (now Xiuning in Anhui province). He was famous for his landscape paintings, where he first imitated Ni Zan and then Wu Zhen and Dong Qichang. His works feature simplicity and carry a touch of loneliness and solitude. Zha was known as one of the “Four Painters of the Xin’an School,” with the other three being Hongren, Sun Yi, and Wang Zhirui. He also studied calligraphy and paid homage to the style of Mi Fu.
