He obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in painting at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos under the tutelage of Professor Yusuf Grillo, Kolade Oshinowo and the late Bisi Fakeye. Olaku's artistic journey began in the early 1980s when he started teaching art at Ebologu Grammar School in Delta State. In 1984, he became a full-time studio artist.
