Biography:

Alair Pambegan is a Wik-Mungkan man who lives in the western Cape York community of Aurukun in North Queensland. He is the son of revered lawman, elder and artist Arthur Koo’ekka Pambegan Jr and heir to the Wik-Mungkan artistic traditions. Pambegan was born in Aurukun, Queensland, in 1966, where he continues to live and work today. His practice includes large-scale paintings on canvas and installation. He is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, and Cairns Art Gallery. Pambegan's artwork often reflects his connection to his country and culture, and he is known for his collaborative works with other Wik-Mungkan artists. He has been involved in several intergenerational collaborations, including with his late father Arthur Pambegan Jnr, who was the chief custodian of his peoples’ stories. Pambegan's artwork has been exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions, including at the Cairns Art Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, and Firstdraft in Sydney. He has also been the subject of several articles and interviews, including in Art Guide Australia and the QAGOMA Blog.
