Biography:

Alan Crump was a South African artist, teacher, curator, writer, judge, arts administrator, and arts activist. He was born in Johannesburg in 1949 and died in 2009. Crump was a pioneering member of the National Arts Festival Committee and was known for his extraordinary subtlety and skill as an artist. He was also a lecturer at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand. Crump's work often explored the relationship between art and politics, and he was a strong advocate for the role of the arts in society. He was awarded the Order of the Baobab in Silver in 2006 for his contributions to the arts in South Africa.
