Alfred Noel Joseph Rubie, an Australian modernist painter, portrait and commercial photographer, playwright, and pharmacy proprietor, worked in Sydney during the 1920s and into the 1960s. Born on Christmas Day in 1901, Rubie was one of five children to Annie Maria (née Cooper) and James Joseph Rubie in Newtown, New South Wales.
Rubie's artistic career began with the exhibition of his paintings from 1929. He simultaneously set up a commercial art business with Jack E. Turner at 10 Bligh St., Corydon, from November 1930. Rubie was also involved with the Independent Theatre as a photographer, actor, writer, and costume and set designer. His work as a painter and photographer is notable for its unique style and creativity.
