Biography:
Alicia Leal Veloz is a Cuban painter born in Sancti Spíritus in 1957. She is known for her focus on women and the relationship between women and men in her work, which often features a flat perspective and intricate, narrative details. Leal's paintings are inspired by folk art and she works from a studio she owns with her husband and fellow painter Juan Moreira in El Vedado, Havana, Cuba. Her work is part of permanent collections at institutions such as the National Museum of Fine Art in Havana and the Spanish Embassy at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Leal is a 1980 graduate of the San Alejandro Fine Arts School and is a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the International Association of Art (IAA/AIAP). She has participated in nearly one-hundred collective exhibitions and has had solo exhibitions in Cuba, Germany, the United States, and Jamaica.
