Biography:

Ang Ah Tee is a renowned Singaporean painter, born on November 11, 1943. He received the prestigious Cultural Medallion in 2009 for his significant contributions to visual arts in Singapore.

Early Life and Education

Ang attended afternoon art classes in addition to his formal education. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1960 to 1962, where he was taught by prominent artists Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng, pioneers of the Nanyang Style.

Career

After graduating, Ang worked as a clerk at the Port Authority of Singapore. In his spare time, he painted in watercolor and oil. In 1974, he won the Open Art Competition and participated in a group exhibition at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. By 1976, he had painted several prominent landmarks in Singapore. In 1977, he left his job to devote more time to painting. Notable Achievements:

  • In 1978, Ang transitioned from using oil and watercolor to acrylic for his artwork.
  • He won the National Day Art Award in 1978.
  • His first solo exhibition was held at the Mandarin Hotel in 1979.
  • In 1981, he visited various countries across Europe and painted prominent landmarks.
  • He also visited Egypt, Nepal, Kashmir, China, and Australia.
  • In 2001, he won the first prize at the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Awards Competition.

Awards and Recognition

Ang received the Cultural Medallion in 2009 for his contributions to visual arts in Singapore. His work can be found in various museums, including the National Gallery Singapore, which features his painting Mama Stall (Sophia Road).
