Biography:

Kapulani Landgraf is a Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiian) artist, born in 1966 in Pu'ahu'ola, Kaneohe, Hawaii, USA. She is best known for her work in black-and-white photography, addressing the legacies of colonialism and its impact on indigenous Hawaiian rights, value and history. Her most recent work combines photographic series with objects and installations. Kapulani Landgraf received her education at Windward Community College, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Vermont College, where she obtained her MFA. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the En Foco New Works Photography Award in 1999, the State Foundation on Culture & Arts Fellowship in 1996, the Ka Palapala Pu’ukela Award in 1995, the Roy Levin – Jessica Lutz Award in 1994, and the Image XVI ‘Kodak Eastman Award’ in 1991. Kapulani Landgraf’s practice captures a contemporary indigenous view of sacred places and land issues in Hawai‘i. Passionately concerned with heritage and cultural issues, her work offers a unique perspective on the relationship between the Hawaiian people, their land, and the impact of colonialism.
