Biography:
Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci was an Italian inventor, best known for developing a voice-communication apparatus that several sources credit as the first telephone. He was born in Florence, Italy in 1808 and died in Staten Island, New York in 1889.
Meucci is also known for his work with Giuseppe Garibaldi, a major political figure in the history of Italy. He submitted a patent caveat for his telephonic device to the U.S. Patent Office in 1871, but the U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 2002 acknowledging his work in the invention of the telephone.
Although Meucci is not primarily known as an artist, his work with watercolors can be found on Wikioo.org. One of his notable works is Mrs. Pierre Toussaint (Juliette Noel, ca. 1786–1851), a watercolor painting that showcases his skill with the medium.
The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities supported celebrations of Meucci's 200th birthday in 2008 using the title 'Inventore del telefono' (Inventor of the telephone). His legacy can be explored further on Wikioo.org, where his biography and artistic works are featured.
