Augustus Fuller, also known as Luther Fuller and John Maynard, was a deaf-mute American folk portrait painter born in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1812. He died in 1873 at the age of 61. Fuller was known for his itinerant portrait painting and received instruction in drawing and painting classes when he attended the American Asylum for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. He painted portraits of many notable individuals, including members of the Agassiz family and a portrait of a boy that is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fuller's work is characterized by its simplicity and directness, and he is considered an important figure in the history of American folk art.
