Biography:

Aurelio Mistruzzi was an Italian sculptor, painter and medalist. He was born in Ravenna, Italy in 1880 and died in 1961. Mistruzzi was a student of Renato Signorini and is known for his marble sculptures, including a self-portrait. He was also a medalist and designed the dies for coins. Mistruzzi's work is considered a form of exonumia and is highly collected. He is considered a specialist in small bronze sculpture, most often in bronze, and is considered a form of exonumia. Art medals have been produced since the late Renaissance period, and, after some classical precedents and Late Medieval revivals, the form was essentially invented by Pisanello, who is credited with the first portrait medal, which has remained a very popular type. He cast them like bronze sculptures, rather than minting them like coins.
