Biography:

Baltasar Vargas de Figueroa (April 23, 1629 - February 19, 1667) was a colonial painter. He was the son of Gaspar de Figueroa and Lorenza de Vargas. To differentiate him from his grandfather, Baltasar de Figueroa "el Viejo", he is known as Baltasar Vargas de Figueroa. Trained in his father's workshop, he had a remarkable and close relationship with his father, which makes it difficult to correctly attribute the paintings that are not signed. He also succeeded his father in the military position of second lieutenant of militias. It is said that the painters Gregorio Carvallo de la Parra and the brothers Juan Bautista and Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos were trained with him. His style was traditional, with subjects of a religious nature, although he also painted some portraits of ecclesiastics and civilians.
