Biography:
Banka Maruyama was a Japanese artist who specialized in landscape paintings and watercolors. He was born in Nagano, Japan in 1867 and passed away in 1942. Maruyama studied under Kodama Katei, learning the Nanga style of painting before moving to Tokyo to study Western techniques at Kaiga Gakusha and Shogido. After traveling to Europe and the United States, he founded the Taiheiyo Gakai society where he exhibited his work. Maruyama was also a founding member of the New Nihonga Society in 1918. He participated in the Bunten and Meiji Bujutsukai exhibitions from 1907 onwards.
