Biography:

Bartel Jamnitzer was a German goldsmith, etcher, and designer of gold and silver objects. He was born in Nuremberg in 1548 and died there in 1593. Jamnitzer was the son of Hans Jamnitzer, a goldsmith, and the nephew of Wenzel Jamnitzer, a renowned goldsmith and designer. Bartel Jamnitzer became a master goldsmith in Nuremberg in 1574. He was known for his intricate and detailed designs, often incorporating natural forms and patterns. Jamnitzer's most famous work is the Nautilus Cup, a silver cup made between 1576 and 1591, which is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The cup is decorated with a variety of figures and motifs, including a nautilus shell, a male figure, and a variety of plants and animals. Jamnitzer's work was highly influential in the development of the German Renaissance style, and he is considered one of the most important goldsmiths of the 16th century.
