Biography:

Boris Deutsch was a figurative and expressionist painter born in Krasnagorka shtetl, then part of the Russian Empire, in 1892. He was educated at the Bloom Academy of Fine Arts in Riga and completed postgraduate work in Berlin. With the outbreak of World War I, he was drafted into the Russian army, but his mother helped him desert with false identity papers.

Early Career and Influences

Deutsch's early career was marked by a series of moves, from Harbin in China to Japan, and eventually to the United States in 1916. He settled in Los Angeles, where he joined the group of artists called The Art Students' League, which included notable artists such as Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Sadakichi Hartmann. Deutsch worked for Paramount Pictures in the special effects department and taught advanced painting at Otis Art Institute for about six years.

Artistic Style and Notable Works

Deutsch's artistic style was characterized by his use of bold colors and expressive brushstrokes, as seen in his Nude Self-Portrait and other works. He was also known for his portraits, which included notable figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, and Henry A. Wallace. In 1929, he decorated some interiors of the Floridian Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
