Biography:
Cândido Palma Teixeira de Melo was a Portuguese architect. He studied at the Casa Pia de Lisboa and graduated from the Escola de Belas Artes de Lisboa in 1947. Palma de Melo participated actively in the I Congresso Nacional de Arquitectura in 1948, presenting a communication on the teaching of architecture in Portugal. He was a collaborator at the atelier of Keil do Amaral from 1945 to 1951 and later established his own atelier with Artur Pires Martins in 1955. Palma de Melo's work is characterized by its adherence to the International Style, influenced by Le Corbusier and his units of habitation. He was a pioneer in the fight against architectural barriers and received the Helios award from the European Commission for his work on accessibility.
