Carol Popp de Szathmary, also known as Szathmáry Pap Károly, was a Romanian painter, lithographer, and photographer of Transylvanian Hungarian origin. He was born in Kolozsvár, Romania in 1812 and died in Bucharest, Romania in 1887. Szathmari is considered the founder of Romanian photography and is also known as the world's first combat photographer for his pictures of the battlefield taken during the first year of the Russo-Turkish war, later known as the Crimean War.
