Biography:
Catherine Murphy is an American painter, born in 1946 in New York. She is known for her photorealistic paintings that depict everyday objects and scenes. Murphy studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and at the Art Students League of New York. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982 and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1985. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe, and is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.
