Biography:
, an American artist, was born on March 25, 1858, in Tiverton Four Corners, Rhode Island. His father, a Baptist preacher, faced economic worries, which did not deter Charles from pursuing his passion for art. At the age of 14, he began painting, and by 20, he had already opened his own studio in Providence, Rhode Island.
Stetson's friendships with fellow artists Edward Bannister and George William Whitaker led to the founding of the Providence Art Club on February 19, 1880. This association not only marked a significant milestone in Stetson's career but also underscored his commitment to nurturing artistic communities.
Stetson married Charlotte Perkins in 1884, with whom he had one child in 1885. After their separation in 1888 and amicable divorce in 1894, Stetson married Grace Ellery Channing, Charlotte's cousin and closest friend. This union led to his relocation to California and subsequently to Rome, Italy, in 1901.
Stetson's work is characterized by its allegorical and imaginative qualities, with a richness of color that set him apart from other Rhode Island artists of his time. His legacy extends beyond the state, earning him a place in the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 2011.
