His artistic journey began with studying architecture at National Central University in Chongqing, followed by further studies at the University of Illinois, which significantly influenced his artistic approach.
Chen Qikuan's work is characterized by a unique blend of traditional Chinese painting techniques with Western modernist styles. This harmonious fusion contributed to the evolution of contemporary Chinese art. Notably, his architectural background shaped his perspective on time, space, and composition, as seen in his use of Batik, ink rubbing, and ink dripping techniques.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Chen Qikuan's birth, Christie's presented a collection of his paintings, including Arcadia / Coexistence, which were part of the Mary Griggs Burke Collection, now benefiting the Yale University Art Gallery's acquisition funds.
