, an Australian painter, draughtsman, and writer, left an indelible mark on the art world with his captivating works. Born on February 6, 1915, in Cremorne, Sydney, Friend's artistic journey began at the Royal Art Society under Sydney Long in 1930.
Friend's early work was influenced by his time at the Westminster School in London (1936) under Bernard Meninsky and Mark Gertler. His travels to Nigeria (1937-1939) further broadened his artistic horizons. Upon returning to Sydney, Friend became part of the Merioola Group, a collective known for their eclectic style.
Enlisting with the Australian Military Forces in 1942, Friend's experiences were chronicled in his diary, later published as Gunner’s Diary. This publication showcased not only his artistic talent but also his ability to write with humor and insight about his military experience.
