Biography:
Emo de Medeiros is a Beninese-French artist born in 1979 in Cotonou, Benin. He currently lives and works in Cotonou and Paris, exploring themes of transculturalism, transforming identities, post-colonial representations, and globalization as a worldwide hybridization and mutation.
After spending his childhood and teenage years in Cotonou, Benin, Emo de Medeiros moved to France to pursue an academic education. He graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he studied history, sociology, and anthropology. He then continued his training at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts also in Paris, focusing on digital arts.
Emo de Medeiros' work crosses a variety of mediums, including photography, video, textile, painting, performance, and sculpture. His practice is based on the notion of contexture, defined as the creation of artefacts based on interconnections between cultures, materials, concepts, techniques, and practices from diverse areas, eras, and uses. For example, his piece Surtentures #8 (...although strength is hidden in the folds of the haptic mind) explores the relationship between time and memory through the notion of intensity.
Emo de Medeiros' work has been shown internationally, including at the Centre Pompidou and Palais de Tokyo in France. His solo and group shows have also been presented in Benin, United Kingdom, and South Africa. In 2015, he presented Pavillon du Bénin during the 56th Venice Biennale.
Emo de Medeiros is a pioneer of transculturalism and post-colonial representations, exploring the complexities of globalization and identity. His work challenges traditional notions of art and culture, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of our globalized world.
