Biography:

Federico Faruffini was an Italian painter and engraver of historical subjects, in a style that combines the styles and themes of Realism with the diffuse outlines and lively colors of Scapigliatura painters. He was born in Sesto San Giovanni, Italy in 1833 and died in Perugia, Italy in 1869. He studied at the Civica Scuola di Pittura e Scultura in Milan and was active in the mid-nineteenth century. He is best known for his paintings of historical subjects and his engravings. His most famous works include 'Machiavelli and Borgia', 'The death of Ernesto Cairoli', and 'Sacrifice at the Nile'. He received a medal in 1866 for 'Machiavelli and Borgia' and a first prize medal in 1867 for 'The death of Ernesto Cairoli' at the Paris Salon. His lack of recognition and financial difficulties is said to have led him to his suicide at age 38, in Perugia.
