Fernão Garcia, also known as Fernando de Magallanes, was a Portuguese explorer born in Sabrosa, Portugal around 1480. He is best known for leading the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe in 1519-1522, although he did not live to complete the journey as he was killed in the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines in 1521.

Early Life and Travels

Magellan's early life is not well documented, but it is known that he was born into a family of minor Portuguese nobility. He became a skilled sailor and naval officer in service of the Portuguese Crown in Asia.
