Biography:

Filipe de Sousa Folque was a Portuguese aristocrat, politician, military officer, and mathematician. He was born on November 28, 1800, in Portalegre, Portugal. Folque served as a second lieutenant in the Armada and later became an aide to the Director of Works at the Mondego River. In 1826, he graduated from the University of Coimbra with a degree in mathematics. He was appointed as an aide to the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory in 1827. Folque went on to serve in various roles, including as a lieutenant in the Exército and as a professor at the Academia de Marinha. He created the course of Engineer Hydrographer at the Academia Portuguesa. Folque was promoted to General of Division in the course of Engineering in 1872. He died on December 27, 1874.
