Biography:

Francis Marion Crawford was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy in 1854. He was the son of American sculptor Thomas Crawford and Louisa Cutler Ward, sister of American poet Julia Ward Howe. Crawford studied at St.Paul's school in Concord, New Hampshire, at the University of Cambridge in 1873, at the University of Heidelberg, and at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. In 1879, he went to India to study Sanskrit and edited the Allâhâbâd daily newspaper. He returned to America and continued his studies at Harvard University. Crawford was known for his novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastical stories. He died in Sorrento, Italy in 1909.
