Place: Chios (Axio)
Biography:
Francisco Albo was a native of Chios (Axio), an island in the Aegean. He was a botswain and navigator who participated in the expedition of Fernando de Magellan. He originally served as the botswain of the Trinidad, Magellan's own ship, but after the Trinidad did not return, he became the pilot of the Victoria under the command of Sebastian de Elcano. He is known for keeping the log-book of the Victoria, which is one of the records of the first circumnavigation of the globe preserved in Spain. He was thoroughly grounded in the Portuguese method of navigation, which involved the use of a four-year table of declinations and observation of the noon Sun.
