Biography:
Francisco Rizi was a Spanish painter of Italian ancestry. He was born on April 9th, 1614 in Madrid and died on August 2nd, 1685 at San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid). His father, Antonio Ricci, was an Italian painter who had come to Spain in 1583 to do decorative work at El Escorial. Rizi began his apprenticeship in his father's workshop and later studied with Vicente Carducho. He became a court painter early on (around 1638) and was associated with the Spanish royal family throughout his career. In addition to painting, he also worked as a stage designer. His brother Juan Rizi was also an artist.
