Biography:
Frants Michael Regenfuss was a German artist, engraver, and naturalist. He was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1712 and died in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1780. Regenfuss announced the upcoming publication of a richly illustrated book on mollusks and crustaceans as early as 1748. He studied painting and engraving and planned to create a large work on conchology, which was published in 1751 with 12 copper plates. The work was later continued in Denmark, where Regenfuss moved in 1754. Despite receiving significant financial support from the Danish government, Regenfuss struggled with completing the work due to health issues and slow progress. He also had a poor economy, having bought Jægergården in Lyngby, which he owned from 1755-63. The work was eventually published in 1758 with public support, but it remained unfinished at Regenfuss' death in 1780.
