Franz Seraph Lenbach

, after 1882, Ritter von Lenbach (13 December 1836 – 6 May 1904), was a renowned German painter known for his captivating portraits of prominent personalities from the nobility, arts, and industry. Born in Schrobenhausen, Kingdom of Bavaria, Lenbach's early life was marked by his father's profession as a Master Mason. He completed his primary education at Landsberg in 1848 and later attended a business school in Landshut.

Artistic Journey

Lenbach's artistic journey began with an apprenticeship to the sculptor Anselm Sickinger in Munich from 1851 to 1852. He then studied at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, where he befriended Johann Baptist Hofner, an animal painter, and decided to pursue a career in art. In 1854, Lenbach obtained his family's reluctant permission to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under the guidance of Hermann Anschütz. He later took private lessons from Karl von Piloty, with whom he traveled to Rome in 1858.
