He was the sixth child of Fidel Winterhalter, a farmer and resin producer, and his wife Eva Meyer. Franz Xaver's early life was marked by his close relationship with his family, particularly his brother Hermann, who also became a painter. Franz Xaver attended school at a Benedictine monastery in St. Blasien before leaving for Freiburg im Breisgau to study drawing and engraving under Karl Ludwig Schüler. In 1823, he moved to Munich, sponsored by Baron von Eichtal, to continue his artistic training.
