Biography:
Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe was a German book dealer, art dealer and publisher. He was born on December 4, 1712, in Crelpa, Germany. Raspe studied at the Lateinschule in Naumburg and completed his apprenticeship as a bookseller in Leipzig. He worked in various bookstores in Helmstedt, Wittenberg, and Zerbst before joining the famous Gleditsch bookstore in Leipzig. In 1739, he was appointed by the widow of Johann Stein to manage the Stein's bookstore in Nuremberg, which he continued until her death in 1743. He then married Stein's daughter and took over the management of the bookstore together with his brother-in-law. Raspe was also involved in the publication of Siebmacher's Wappenbuch, a roll of arms that became an important source of heraldry for the German-speaking regions.
