Biography:

George Bagby Matthews was an American painter. He studied in Paris and specialized in portraiture, landscape, and Southern history painting, particularly of the Confederate period. Matthews served as the official artist of the U.S. Capitol for a number of years and his paintings can be found there, in Richmond, and elsewhere.
