George Lilanga Di Nyama was a renowned Tanzanian painter and sculptor, born in 1934 in Kikwetu, Masasi District, Tanzania. He belonged to the Makonde people and spent most of his life in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. As a prominent figure in contemporary African art, Lilanga's work was exhibited in international art shows, including Africa Remix 2004 and African Art Now in 2005.
Lilanga began his training as a sculptor in 1961, and in 1972, he settled in Dar es Salaam. In 1973, he became associated with the newly founded Nyumba ya Sanaa (House of Arts), a gallery and cultural center that played a significant role in his development as an artist. The Nyumba ya Sanaa exposed him to other modern artists, which influenced his transformation from traditional sculptural forms to two-dimensional art works like paintings, etchings, or panels.
