Biography:

George Mann Niedecken was a renowned American prairie style furniture designer and interior architect from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born on August 16, 1878, Niedecken is best known for his collaboration with the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He also designed interiors for Marion Mahony Griffin, one of the first female architects.

Early Life and Education

Niedecken's interest in art began at a young age. He attended the Wisconsin Art Institute at 12 and later studied under artist Richard Lorenz. He moved to Chicago and entered the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was instructed by Louis Millet. From 1899-1902, Niedecken studied art in Europe.

Career

Niedecken started an interior-architecture firm in 1907, called Niedecken-Waldbridge, with his brother-in-law in Milwaukee. He became known for his work in Prairie style buildings and worked closely with Frank Lloyd Wright on eleven commissions, providing interior design with textiles, lighting, furniture, and arts. Some notable works include the Dana–Thomas House, Avery Coonley House, and Frederick Robie House. Niedecken's collaboration with Wright ended in 1918 when Wright opened an office in Los Angeles. Prairie Style Collaborations Niedecken's work with Frank Lloyd Wright and Marion Mahony Griffin showcased his expertise in Prairie style design. His furniture and murals for the Amberg and Irving houses are notable examples of his collaboration with Griffin.
