Biography:

Gil Morlanes el joven was a Spanish Renaissance sculptor born in Zaragoza, Spain in 1480. He was the son of Gil Morlanes el viejo, also a sculptor. His first record as an artist is a contract dated March 18, 1515, where he became an apprentice with the sculptor Damián Forment to learn the trade of 'ymaginería'. By 1518, he was already carving images for his master in wood and alabaster. His main production of sculptures was done in the Aragon region, but he also undertook several jobs in the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, where he spread the influence of Forment. He worked at the altar of the Chapel of St. Michael at the Cathedral of San Pedro de Jaca between 1521 and 1523, where he executed the base of the altar and the sculptures of the epistles. He also collaborated with the sculptor Gabriel Yoly in carrying out the work of the high altar of Tauste in San Pedro and one of San Cosme and San Damian in Teruel. Gil Morlanes el joven died in 1552.
