Giovanni Battista Giraldi

, also known as Giambattista Giraldi or Cinthio, was a prominent Italian novelist and poet born in Ferrara in 1504. He studied at the University of Ferrara and became a professor of natural philosophy in 1525, then succeeded Celio Calcagnini in the chair of belles-lettres in 1537.

Between 1542 and 1560, Giovanni Battista Giraldi served as a private secretary to Hercule II and Alfonso II d'Este, the dukes of Ferrara. After a literary quarrel, he moved to Mondovì where he taught literature until 1568. He then occupied the chair of rhetoric at Pavia until 1573, when he returned to Ferrara in search of health and died there the same year.
