Biography:
Giuseppe Amisani was an Italian portrait painter of the Belle Époque, born on December 7, 1881, in Piazza Mercato (now Piazza Amisani) in the comune of Mede di Lomellina, near Pavia in Lombardy, northern Italy. He studied at the technical institute of Pavia, where he failed the technical drawing course, and later at the Accademia di Brera in Milan under Cesare Tallone and Vespasiano Bignami.
Amisani's career as a painter began to take shape when he won the Mylius prize of the Academy for his painting l'Eroe ("the hero") in 1908. He also won the Fumagalli prize for figure-painting with his portrait of Lyda Borelli in 1911 or 1912. These early achievements marked the beginning of a successful career, during which he became known for his elegant and fresh style.
Amisani's work gained international recognition, and he spent several years in Argentina and Brazil. He also traveled to England, France, North Africa, and the United States, exposing himself to various cultures and artistic styles. This exposure had a significant impact on his work, as evident in his landscapes of the Italian Alps, Rhodes, and Tunisia.
Some of Amisani's notable works include La Teletta, which is housed at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan, and his portrait of Lyda Borelli, which can be found at the São Paulo Museum of Art in Brazil. Amisani exhibited at the twelfth Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della Città di Venezia (later known as the Biennale di Venezia) in 1920. Key aspects of Amisani's career:
Despite his success during his lifetime, Amisani's name is not included in the principal works of reference in the twenty-first century. However, a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Castello Sforzesco of Vigevano in 2008 marked a renewed interest in his art.
