Biography:
Giuseppe Piermarini was an Italian architect born in Foligno in 1734 and died in 1808. He was trained by Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples and is best known for designing the Teatro alla Scala in Milan (1776-1778). He also worked as a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan and contributed to the reorganization of the University of Pavia and the Accademia di Scienze e Belle Lettere in Mantua. Piermarini's work is characterized by a neoclassical style and he is considered one of the most important architects of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Italy.
