Gottlob Widmann;Wigomat

Place: Germany

Born: 1954

Biography:

Wigomat is the name of the world's first electrical drip coffee maker, patented in 1954 in Germany by Gottlob Widmann. The name 'Wigomat' is derived from the manufacturer's name, 'Widmann'. The machine was originally delivered as 'FK-1' (for filter coffee machine) before being renamed to 'Wigomat'. The Wigomat was advertised for having the best brewing temperature, as coffee was traditionally brewed by hand or in a percolator, both of which were considered to have too high a temperature. The Wigomat remained a competitor in the market until the 1970s, when many machines followed its principle of drip coffee. In 1975, a New York-based magazine wrote that the Wigomat was one of the best of the currently popular instant-drip coffee makers.
