Hank Willis Thomas is an American conceptual artist born in 1976 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He is based in Brooklyn, New York and works primarily with themes related to identity, history, and popular culture. Thomas is widely known for his investigation of themes relating to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture. His work has been exhibited at numerous institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship. Thomas is also the co-founder of the artist-run super PAC, For Freedoms, which leverages art, media, and politics to further participation, equity, and justice in the United States.
